Bustin Burnout Q&A

Kate and Alyssa are back with a Q & A to give some insights into their personal experiences with Bustin Burnout and how they deal with it. Learn how they identify burnout at the onset and what they do to keep themselves centered.

Kate

  1. What is the biggest signal for you that burnout is approaching or has already arrived? a. When my alarm goes off in the morning and my first thought is “ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?” instead of… “oh, it’s morning.”

  2. What are some things you notice yourself doing, or avoiding, that you KNOW contribute to burnout? (ex, overscheduling, working past desired hours, etc.) a.Constantly scrolling my phone or having difficulty pulling myself away from my phone and not prioritizing physical activity throughout my week.

  3. What is the most “embarrassing” attempt to mitigate burnout that you have tried? a. In an effort to motivate myself to like exercise, I joined a YMCA and decided to try every single class at least once as a way to figure out what type of exercise I liked best. At one point I found myself in a water aerobics class, surrounded by senior citizens. They were super welcoming and we had a great time, but the visual of me desperately trying to find SOMETHING I liked surrounded by older folks doing leg lifts in a pool still makes me giggle.

  4. What is a consistent routine that has gotten you through the dark times when you weren’t able to take a break or change your schedule? a. My bedtime routine. Even if I’m not sleeping well, I stick to it and it’s my favorite part of the day.

  5. Who is your accountability person? (Does your partner/friend/roommate call you out when you're overworking/not caring for yourself?) Who's your support network? a. Alyssa is always the first to remind me to slow down! But I like to think I have a wide net of friends who help to hold me accountable in different ways. I “spread the wealth” in that I don’t just rely on one person to help process, complain to and have fun with. My wide network is my key to keeping perspective in life’s problems and gaining a diversity of insight.

  6. Where do you find joy in your life? Who or what do you turn to for a guaranteed laugh? a. I don’t think I have a single friendship that doesn’t include uncontrollable giggles in some form. Joy is typically where I find connection with others, so my friends lift me up even when they aren’t trying because …. Together we are just hilarious… to me. But that’s the only opinion that matters. 😂

Alyssa

  1. What is the biggest signal for you that burnout is approaching or has already arrived? a. If I start hoping I have 1-2 no shows throughout the week to just…sit and stare.

  2. What are some things you notice yourself doing, or avoiding, that you KNOW contribute to burnout? (ex, overscheduling, working past desired hours, etc.) a. Overscheduling myself and procrastinating on notes. I’ll talk myself into ONE MORE client at the end of the day when I know its the wrong call.

  3. What is the most “embarrassing” attempt to mitigate burnout that you have tried? a. Waking up earlier to do more work. I thought if I could cram more admin work into my mornings, that would somehow result in a better day. Wrong, dead tired.

  4. What is a consistent routine that has gotten you through the dark times when you weren’t able to take a break or change your schedule? a. Not so much a routine but rather allowing flexibility and adjusting expectations when burnout is high. I’m not the same person when burnt out as I am when well rested, I can’t expect myself to perform the same way.

  5. Who is your accountability person? (Does your partner/friend/roommate call you out when you're overworking/not caring for yourself?) Who's your support network? a. Definitely my fellow therapist friends! They are quick to give a reality check.

  6. Where do you find joy in your life? Who or what do you turn to for a guaranteed laugh? a. I'm lucky to have the world's funniest toddler to raise, she's always down to clown and make me stop and smell the roses.  b. Also, catching a few quick laughs between sessions with Kate always helps!
